Social Studies

Philosophy & Vision

The Social Studies Department offers a program that is designed to assist students in becoming informed citizens who appreciate the value and worth of each individual. We strongly believes that involvement in the Social Studies program will encourage students to contribute in a positive fashion to the interdependent society they will inherit.

Our core history classes are uniquely designed to teach history through a global perspective.   Studying U.S. and World history through an integrated, transnational approach allows students to better understand & explore how U.S. History fits into a global context.   We utilize both chronological and thematic approaches, with an emphasis on the connections throughout history.  This approach also allows for more in-depth analysis of contemporary issues.

The Wilmington High School graduate will:

  • Explain democratic/constitutional principles and practices.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take action within a political system.
  • Analyze basic economic problems confronting individuals, nations, and the world.
  • Use historical evidence and primary sources to formulate positions and demonstrate understanding of both past and current issues.
  • Analyze social problems for global and historical perspectives.
  • Appreciate the heritage, customs, and arts of other cultures throughout history.
